Rude Parrot Productions first film project is a documentary short. A “short film”, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (the people who bring you the Oscars each year), is a film that last no more than forty minutes, including the roll of the credits at the end of the film.
This first project, we are calling “Alpha” for now, because several titles for the film are still under consideration. The subject of our film deals with America’s small business community and how they are “weathering the storm” of the current economic downturn. The film will include interviews with several small business people in various industries that tell of their hopes, fears and dreams for their businesses, their industries and the current and future state of entrepreneurship in America.
Some interesting facts about America’s small businesses you might not have known:
- Represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms.
- Employ just over half of all private sector employees.
- Pay 44 percent of total U.S. private payroll.
- Have generated 64 percent of net new jobs over the past 15 years.
- Create more than half of the nonfarm private gross domestic product (GDP).
- Hire 40 percent of high tech workers (such as scientists, engineers, and computer programmers).
- Are 52 percent home-based and 2 percent franchises.
- Made up 97.3 percent of all identified exporters and produced 30.2 percent of the known export value in FY 2007.
- Produce 13 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms; these patents are twice as likely as large firm patents to be among the one percent most cited.
As one can plainly see, the health of the small business community is vital to our economy’s survival!

Our goal is to have the film completed by a November 15, 2011 deadline in order to submit it to the SXSW Film Festival, which is held in Austin, Texas every year. The dates for the film festival this year are March 9-17th, 2012.
Our hope is that Alpha will serve as our “calling card” to promote our next project, “Beta“. This is tentatively set to be our first ” feature length” film. Project Beta will include an “interesting wrinkle” that will be revealed at a later date.
